Navigating the UK welfare benefits system can be complex – but this ever-popular introductory course aims to make it clear, practical and manageable.
Delivered online across two interactive days, Benefits for Beginners equips frontline workers, support staff, and advisers with the confidence and essential knowledge to guide others through the benefits maze.
The course will be delivered over two days and attendance on both sessions is required.
20 October 2025: Day 1 – General Benefits Overview
21 October 2025: Day 2 – Introduction to Universal Credit
Day 1 will support you to:
- Identify the range of different benefits and which apply in different situations
- Understand disability-related benefits, including Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and support for those too unwell to work – with discussion on the Government’s proposed changes
- Understand how to claim help with rent and navigate the different rules across social housing and private sector.
- Use online tools and resources to effectively assist vulnerable clients
Day 2 will support you to:
- Help clients claim and maintain Universal Credit
- Understand current developments in Managed Migration to Universal Credit
- Break down how Universal Credit is calculated, including allowances and elements
- Recognise the housing element, especially for tenants and clients in different types of accommodation
- Help clients to negotiate effectively with DWP and resolve common issues
- Access trusted online resources which really help
Who should attend?
This introductory level course will be starting from scratch. The notes and slides aim to provide a basis for further learning and will not cover all aspects in detail.
The course will be accompanied by a set of comprehensive course notes.
Please note the course will not be covering any immigration-related benefits issues.
