Working with clients who present with multiple and complex needs can feel overwhelming.
This two-day course will explore the challenges and approaches to supporting people with co-occurring mental health and substance use needs (commonly referred to as dual diagnosis). Participants will gain an understanding of how these needs interact, how they affect engagement and treatment, and how to apply practical tools and strategies in a frontline settings.
Designed for support and housing teams, mental health and substance misuse practitioners, this course will help build knowledge, confidence, and skills to work more effectively with complex presentations and dual diagnosis clients.
Phil Harris has over 28 years of experience working with complex needs in both frontline and leadership roles. He has developed services across the UK and internationally and has written extensively on effective practice in substance misuse and dual diagnosis.
This course will support you to:
- Describe how substance misuse and mental health issues interact
- Recognise the needs of different sub-populations of dual diagnosis clients
- Understand and apply the relevant NHS framework to support dual diagnosis clients.
- Apply practical strategies to support symptom management
- Improve engagement and support planning for dually diagnosed clients
