Local authorities have a legal duty to support people who are homeless or living in unsafe or unsuitable housing.
This practical one-day course provides an accessible introduction to homelessness law and the responsibilities of the local authorities, combining the core legislation and how it is applied in practice.
We will explore key concepts including homelessness, eligibility, priority need, intentional homelessness, and local connection. The course will also consider the impact of the Homeless Reduction Act and provide essential guidance on review and appeal rights following a negative homelessness decision.
This course will support you to learn:
- Understand key legislation and the Code of Guidance
- Recognise the legal definitions of homelessness and how they are applied
- Develop a structured approach to assessing eligibility, priority need, intentional homelessness and local connection
- Identify how and when homelessness duties arise, and the circumstances in which they can end
- Gain familiarity with key case law influencing homelessness decisions
Who should attend?
Suitable for new and less experienced advisors, housing staff, and support workers, who want to build confidence and knowledge in homelessness law and better support clients navigating the system.
