Introduction to Housing Law

Expired Introduction to Housing Law

Date & Time of Course

  •  11 May, 2026
     10:00 am - 4:30 pm

Location:

A working knowledge of homelessness and housing law is essential for anyone supporting people at risk of losing their home.

This practical one-day course provides an introduction to identifying a client’s housing status and will give you the confidence to understand their legal protections and recognise when eviction action may be unlawful or challengeable.

The course focuses on the private and social rented sectors and explains how possession processes work in practice — including notice requirements, grounds for possession, and the role of the court. It also provides an accessible overview of current and upcoming changes under the Renter’s Rights legislation and what they mean for frontline advice work.

Through practical examples and case scenarios, participants will learn how to spot risks early and make informed decisions about next steps and referrals.

This course will support you to:

  • Determine a client’s housing status and understand why it affects their legal rights
  • Recognise when someone is legally homeless or threatened with homelessness
  • Identify valid and invalid landlord notices
  • Understand the main grounds for possession, how they operate in practice, and their implications for occupiers
  • Understand how court discretion works in possession proceedings
  • Understand the basics of local authority homelessness duties and decision stages

Who should attend?

Suitable for new and less experienced advisors and support workers who require a grounding in the key legislation and provisions surrounding the rented sector.
