Mental health difficulties and homelessness are closely linked. You may regularly support individuals experiencing a range of mental health conditions.
This practical course will give you the skills needed to support individuals experiencing mental health challenges.
This course will support you to:
- Understand different definitions and models of mental illness and disorders
- Identify the risk factors involved in poor mental health, including past trauma and homelessness
- Improve your ability to recognise the signs and symptoms of major mental health problems
- Recognise the structure of mental health services and potential pathways to access them
- Familiarise yourself with services, treatments, and support options
- Be aware of good practice in supporting and communicating with people experiencing mental health problems
- Be aware of the key legal issues affecting people experiencing homelessness with mental illness
In Module One we will look at:
- Mental Illness – models & definitions
- Major illnesses/disorders signs, symptoms & behaviours
- Personality disorder
In Module Two we will look at:
- What services and sources of help are available
- Mental health and its prevalence in homelessness
- What can you do to help and tips on how to refer clients
In Module Three we will look at:
- Legal issues within mental health and homelessness and the Care Act
- Client case studies and shared learning
- Recap and questions
