In our work supporting people, professional boundaries are essential to providing a safe, respectful, and responsible environment.
Professional boundaries protect both you and the people you support. We are often working on a deep level with clients and have a responsibility to ensure that our help and support empowers rather than damages or alienates.
A Psychologically Informed Environment (PIE) recognises how past experiences, trauma, and emotional needs can shape behaviour and engagement. Working within a PIE approach means being reflective, compassionate, and aware of how our responses, communication, and the environments we create impact those we support. Clear professional boundaries are a key part of this — they provide consistency, safety, and predictability, which are essential for trust and emotional wellbeing.
Our work can be emotionally challenging, and professional boundaries also help us to manage ourselves and our own emotional wellbeing, prevent burnout, and foster trust — all essential to effective frontline work.
This interactive online course offers a practical and reflective space to explore professional boundaries. Through discussion, real-life examples, and self-reflection, you’ll strengthen your ability to maintain healthy, professional relationships, understand behaviour through a psychological lens, and navigate complex situations with confidence and empathy.
This course will support you to:
- Recognise and maintain clear professional boundaries
- Distinguish between personal and professional behaviours
- Identify and prevent unprofessional conduct
- Understand vulnerabilities and risk factors in your work
- Apply confidentiality appropriately and know its limits
- Reflect on your own practice to improve effectiveness
- Apply techniques to establish and maintain healthy boundaries
- Take the right action if a boundary breach occurs
