The Health and Care Act 2022 requires all CQC-registered health and care providers in England to ensure their staff receive learning disability and autism training that is appropriate to their role.  The Oliver McGowan Training on Learning Disability and Autism is the Government’s preferred and recommended training to support providers in meeting this requirement.

This one-day, face-to-face Tier 2 course is designed for staff who provide direct support and care to autistic people and people with a learning disability.  It covers the Tier 2 learning outcomes within the Core Capabilities Framework and will equip participants with the knowledge, skills and confidence to deliver safe, effective and person-centred care.

An NHS England-approved FitzRoy trainer will be delivering the session alongside two lived experience co-trainers: an autistic Expert by Experience and an Expert by Experience with a learning disability. The day includes interactive learning, group discussion and practical activities that encourage participants to reflect on their own practice and apply their learning in real-life situations.

Learning Disability Learning Outcomes: 

• Recognise and understand unconscious bias to help avoid diagnostic overshadowing.
• Understand the learning from the Learning from Lives and Deaths (LeDeR) reviews, including the impact of co-morbidities.
• Understand the aims of the STOMP and STAMP campaigns to reduce the overmedication of people with a learning disability.
• Understand what reasonable adjustments are and how to implement them in line with the Equality Act 2010.
• Understand when to apply the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
• Understand the principles of Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNACPR) decisions and their appropriate application.
• Improve communication with people with a learning disability and their families.
• Recognise the important role of hospital passports and annual health checks in supporting effective care.

Autism Learning Outcomes: 

• Understand why autism is often described as an invisible condition.
• Reflect on their own values, attitudes and beliefs.
• Recognise the differences, strengths and challenges that autistic people may experience.
• Identify potential triggers for anxiety and distress.
• Identify reasonable adjustments and adapt their practice to provide inclusive, person-centred support.
• Understand the legislation, guidance and resources that promote inclusive and enabling services for autistic people.

Important – e-learning must be completed before attending

It is a requirement that all BHT Sussex staff and external customers complete the Tier 2 e-learning module at least 10 days prior to the course date.
